About Dr. Wheeler’s Practice:
Nancy Wheeler, MD, is a psychiatrist who has had a private practice in Annapolis since 2002. Dr. Wheeler treats adolescent and adult patients. She works in the following capacities:
Many patients come to Dr. Wheeler seeking medication for various mental health conditions. Dr. Wheeler accepts patients who are considering medication for the first time as well as patients with complex medication histories. Dr. Wheeler believes strongly in patient education and working together collaboratively. Respect for patient beliefs and concerns is paramount. With patient permission, Dr. Wheeler will consult with other providers to help ensure continuity of care.
Second-opinion Psychopharmacology Consultation:
Dr. Wheeler welcomes patients who would like a one-time evaluation of diagnosis and current treatment.
Medication Management as Part of a Treatment Team:
Dr. Wheeler welcomes patients who have a therapist and who are considering medication. She works collaboratively with many local therapists in an effort to optimize patient outcomes. Dr. Wheeler will also refer patients to local therapists if a treatment-team approach seems more appropriate.
Dr. Wheeler offers genomic testing, which analyzes how patients’ genes may affect their metabolism and response to FDA-approved medicines commonly prescribed to treat depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD and other behavioral health conditions. Meetings with Family/Friends:
Dr. Wheeler is happy to meet with family and friends if the patient chooses. This is often an opportunity to educate loved ones in how to help the patient toward greater mental health.
Consultations with Other Psychopharmacologists:
With some complex cases, Dr. Wheeler may ask the patient’s permission to discuss his/her case with a colleague. She has traditionally consulted with a small number of well-regarded psychiatrists at local academic centers.
Some things Dr. Wheeler does not do:
- Disability evaluations and determinations: Beyond providing copies of the patient’s medical records upon request, Dr. Wheeler does not engage in disability determinations.
- Serve as an expert witness in legal proceedings: Dr. Wheeler can refer patients to a forensic psychiatrist if they need an expert witness to testify on their behalf.
- Participate with any insurance plans: In order to avoid undue outside influences on the physician/patient relationship, Dr. Wheeler does not participate in any medical insurance plans.
- Accept gifts or honorariae from pharmaceutical companies.
About Dr. Wheeler:
Dr. Wheeler graduated magna cum laude with a BA in English from the University of Pennsylvania. She graduated cum laude from the University of Maryland medical school. She did her residency training at the University of Maryland and Sheppard Pratt Hospitals. Dr. Wheeler has had a private practice in Annapolis since 2002. She has worked as an attending physician at the Psychiatric Urgent Care center in the University of Maryland Medical System.
Dr. Wheeler’s friendly and caring office staff are usually the first people patients meet in the office. They welcome calls about the practice and any questions a patient may have.
